Each player should step up, receive the ball, and pass the ball to the next square. The ball should be moving in clockwise fashion around the large square. Drill of the week: Circle attack! Set-Up: Using your 20x15yd area, use cones to create small gates approximately halfway across the field, with a pop-up goal on both sides. Divide your players into two groups, with each group lining up on the right side of their mini goal, single file. Every player needs a soccer ball at their feet, as shown in the diagram. Explanation: On coach's whistle, the first player in each line should dribble their ball forward and go through the gate on the right side. After the player makes it through the gate, they must attempt to score a goal on the opposite side! After their attempt, they collect their ball and get in their new line. Two players should be going at once, in opposite directions. After the first two go, blow your whistle to prompt the next few to go. Techniques: With no defenders, use big touches on the ball in open space to move quicker! Practice going up the sideline, and then angling in towards the goal Dribble with our laces, and shoot with our laces/inside of the foot To make the activity less challenging: Make sure there are no goalies, and make the area much smaller. Drill of the week: Knockdown! Set-Up: Using your 20x15yd area, divide your players into two even teams, with a line of 4 cones down the middle of the area. Place a soccer ball on top of each cone, and instruct your two teams to each go to a side. On each side, each player needs to match up with someone on the other team, and both line up 10 yds away from one of the middle cones. Players must stay on their side, with 1 soccer ball per 'pair'. Have one team start with the balls, as shown in the diagram. Explanation: On coach's command, players will begin taking turns attempting to knock a soccer ball off a cone in the middle, from their side approximately 10 yards away. The objective is to pass your ball towards the center, knocking the ball off of the cone. After each player goes, the player on the other team across from them now uses the same ball to try. Have players keep score for their team! Techniques: Use the inside of our dominant foot to pass the ball Point your non-dominant foot towards your target Look at your target as you prepare to pass the ball Position your hips facing the target To make the drill less challenging: Move where players attempt from closer to the targets. Drill of the week: Penalty shootout! Set up: Using your 20x15yd area, ensure there is a goal placed on the end line, and a cone 10 yds out. Divide your players into two even tames, one team in pinnies and one team in their usual shirts. Have all players line up shoulder to shoulder "at the half" with their teams, as shown in the diagram. All players need their soccer ball. Explanation: Prior to the start, use the first minute or two to demonstrate the proper shooting technique while all players are lined up should to shoulder. To start, call the first player out to attempt a shot on an unopposed goal. Alternate between teams for each attempt, ensuring we are focusing on the proper shooting technique. See the coaching points to progress the activity. Techniques: Allow yourself space to approach the ball Approach the ball on an angle, not straight on Plant your non-dominant foot next to the ball, pointed at your target Make contact using your laces, with your toes pointed downward Follow through the ball, with your hips facing the target To make this activity less challenging: Allow players to get as close as they need, and use the provided techniques to help players better understand the proper shooting form. To make this activity more challenging: Have a player or coach step in as goalkeeper. Guided Question: When taking a shot on goal, where should I aim? Answer: Towards one of the corners/sides, not down the middle! Each pair needs 1 soccer ball. Explanation: On Coach's command, each pair will begin playing 1v1 with each other with the objective of dribbling past your opponent's end line. After a few rounds, have the players in each box closest to coach, rotate to the next box so players are experiencing different skill levels around them. 1v1 Techniques: Keep your body in between the ball & the defender in close quarters Draw the defender away from the goal/your target Keep the ball close to your body and away from the defender Accelerate into open space when given the chance When defending, position your body on an angle while bending your knees When defending, watch your opponents hips, where the hips are facing is where the body is going To make this activity less challenging: Only have a few 1v1's going at a time with players taking turns, rather than everyone playing at once then rotating. To make this activity more challenging: Place two gates on the end lines for each group, players have to make it through one of the gates rather than just cross the end line. Drill of the week: Soccer freeze tag! Set-Up: Using your 20x15yd area, have all your players spread out with their soccer ball at their feet. Assign two players to start as the taggers, and they do not need a soccer ball to start and should be wearing a different colored pinny. Explanation: On coach's command, players will begin dribbling around the area attempting to avoid being tagged by the taggers. If a player is tagged, they are frozen and must stop their soccer ball to do 10 jumping jacks to unfreeze themselves! Dribbling Techniques: Take small touches using your laces. Keep the ball close to your body. Pick your head up to avoid crashing into teammates. Utilize the sole of the foot to stop the ball. To make the activity less challenging: Use a larger, rather than smaller area to make things more challenging for the taggers. To make the activity more challenging: Use a smaller, rather than larger area to prompt quick decision making, as well as give more challenging commands. (10 Pullbacks to Unfreeze, 10 Roll-Overs etc). It’s not just a game—it’s teamwork, quick feet, and a whole lot of fun! ❄️Frozen? Drill of the week: Passing gates! Set up: Using your 20x15yd area, place 5 to 7 gates down using cones. Have your players get into pairs, with one soccer ball per pair. Explanation: On coach's whistle, players will begin moving throughout the area looking to score points by passing the ball to their partner through one of the gates. Each gate the players successfully complete a pass through is 1 point. Players cannot use the same gate twice in a row. Ensure players know to move and find an open gate after each pass attempt. See the coaching points for how to progress this activity. To make this activity less challenging: Ensure gates are spread out throughout the area to avoid players bumping into one another, and make each gate wider if players are struggling. To make this activity more challenging: Coach can act as a defender, and simply walk throughout the area bumping players balls away from them. Techniques: Use the inside of your dominant foot to pass the ball Aim your non-passing foot at your partner Face your hips towards your partner Pick your head up & look at your target before passing. Guided Question: In a real game situation, after we connect a pass with our teammate, what should we do? Answer: Look to find open space to become an option for another pass! Drill of the Week: Monkey in the Middle Set up: Using your 20x15yd area, use cones to divide your area in half, width wise. Divide your players into two groups of 4, with each group being assigned a side. Assign 1 player to start as our 'monkey' for each side! Have your outside players practice passing to one another trying to keep the ball from the monkey in the middle! Explanation: On Coach's whistle, the outside players will begin passing the ball to one another trying to keep it away from the monkey in the middle. Every time the ball is won, whoever lost the ball is the new monkey. Continue this process until players feel comfortable, and progress the activity using the coaching points. To make this activity less challenging: Ensure there is only 1 group/circle, and initially start with a cone in the middle to avoid rather than an actual defender. To make this activity more challenging: Limit players touches, and/or add in a second defender/monkey. Techniques: Use the inside of your dominant foot to pass the ball Aim your non-passing foot at your partner Face your hips towards your target/partner Pick your head up & look at your target before passing Pay attention as the ball is going to move quick!
